William L. Mills , 90 passed away Friday August 11, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Hospice Center in Edgewood, KY. William was born in Lawrenceburg, KY on June 19, 1927 to the late Virgil J. Mills, Sr. and Margaret Sutherland Mills. He was the widower of the late Lee Farley Mills, whom he married on December 22, 1951; that union lasted 58 years; she preceded him in death on March 8, 2009. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, James C. Mills and Virgil J. Mills, Jr. and a sister Janice Black of Lexington, KY.
Mr. Mills was an educator who started his teaching career at Evarts High school in Harlan County and Principal of Black Star Elementary and High School in Harlan Co. Other school systems he served in were Principal of Georgetown High School, Georgetown, KY, Principal of Carroll County High School in Carrollton, KY and lastly, Superintendent of Grant County Schools, Williamstown, KY. Mr. Mills worked a total of 44 years in public education.
Mr. Mills graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1950 with an AB in Science and Physical Education, and graduated with a Master’s Degree in 1954 from U.K. in Education Administration and Rank I Certification. Mr. Mills was inducted into Phi Delta Kappa, an honorary education fraternity.
Mr. Mills proudly served his country as a Coxswain in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Mills has been a member of the Dry Ridge Baptist Church in Dry Ridge, KY since 1966, and has served as Chairman of the Deacons and taught the Men’s Sunday School class for 20 years. Mr. Mills is a life member of University of KY Alumni Association and National Education Association. He was a member and past president of the Corinth, KY Lion’s Club, a member of the Dry Ridge, KY Kiwanis Club, member of the Georgetown, KY Rotary Club. He is a past member of the Georgetown, KY Masonic Lodge and a past member of the Oleika Shrine Temple in Lexington, KY.
Mr. Mills is survived by daughter, Jennifer (Charlie) Bowen of Williamstown, KY; three grandchildren, Tracie Johnson of Cynthiana, KY, Brandon (Jessica) Bowen of Georgetown, KY, Rebecca Berry of Williamstown, KY, along with six great-grandchildren, Katie & Camron Johnson, Braxton, Emerson and Tristan Bowen and Andrew Berry. Additional survivors include a niece, Wanda Black of Lexington, KY and a nephew, Frank (Connie) Woolard of Cincinnati, OH.
Visitation will be Monday August 14, 2017 at Eckler-McDaniel Funeral Home in Dry Ridge, KY from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Dry Ridge Baptist Church in Dry Ridge, KY at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday August 15th. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Dry Ridge, KY.
Serving as Pallbearers are: Brandon Bowen, Charlie Bowen, Camron Johnson, Tim Richerson, Glenn Johnson and Curt Webster. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bill Cull, Babe Taylor and Frank Woolard, along with the great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Dry Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund or Elevator Fund % Stanley Funeral Homes P.O. Box 130 Williamstown, KY 41097.
