Dorothy Porter

December 3, 1929 - August 5, 2017

Dorothy Porter, age 87, of Verona, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, August 5, 2017 after a 17 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born December 3, 1929 in Mt. Auburn, Kentucky to Sherman and Elizabeth Bishop and lived the majority of her life in Verona.

Dorothy began teaching at the age of 21 and taught in Mt. Auburn, Mentor and Covington before spending most of her teaching career at Walton-Verona. She taught for 38 years and was named Boone County Teacher of the Year in 1988. She was a member at New Bethel Baptist Church for over 60 years where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She touched numerous lives over the years through her love of teaching and for children and her passion for sharing her faith.

She loved to farm and garden and would often sing hymns as she worked outside. Her biggest joy was her family with whom she loved to spend time, cook for and laugh with.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years and amazing caregiver, Robert, daughter Karla of Verona, son Todd of Charlotte, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Tom Alford (Jackie) and Stephanie Brunner (Phillip); six great-grandchildren, Micah Alford, Faith Alford, Lacey Alford, Eliza Alford, Josey Brunner, Sadie Brunner; daughter-in-law Judy Alford; and two sisters, Beulah Fardo and Nellie Riley.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Roy and Raymond and sisters Gertie Mae Bishop and Florence Sweeney; husband Arnold Alford, Jr. and son Steve Alford.

Visitation will be Wednesday, August 9, 4:00-8:00pm at New Bethel Baptist Church, Verona. The funeral service will be at 11:00am Thursday, August 10, at the church. Interment will follow at New Bethel Baptist Cemetery in Verona.
