Mr. James Charles Avery, of Dry Ridge, KY. passed away Monday, March 24 at his residence at the age of 81. Mr. Avery was born August 5, 1932 in Kinston, North Carolina to the late John and Annie Sauls Avery. Mr. Avery served his country during the Korean War and later retired from the United States Air Force. He worked for many years for the State of Ohio and later retired from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He was a member of the Taylor Lodge #164 F & AM in Berry, KY. and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid Civil War historian particularly on the involvement of North Carolina in that war. He was an active member and participant of reunions of the 511 AC & W Group, the unit he was assigned to during his time in the service. Mr. Avery leaves to mourn his passing his wife: Barbara Mathis Avery, 1 son: Steve Avery of Walton, KY., 5 daughters: Tiffany Lehotta of Dry Ridge, KY., Terri Tysinger of Wilmington, NC., Pat Avery of Wilmington, NC., Jamie Collier of Kingsport, TN., & Debi Avery of Independence, MO. James also leaves behind special loved ones, Kishawna DeAtley and family of Williamstown, KY. and Cody White of Dry Ridge, KY. He was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Masonic funeral rites will be conducted 1:00 pm Friday, March 28 in the chapel of the Eckler-McDaniel Funeral Home, Dry Ridge with the Northern Kentucky Allied Masonic Funeral Corps officiating. Visitation will be Friday, March 28 at the funeral home from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. Burial with military honors will be in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North in Williamstown, KY. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Shriners Burn Institute, Hospice of the Bluegrass or to the Alzheimer's Association.
