Dr. Rufus Edward Durden

April 9, 1932 — December 28, 2023

Dr. Rufus Edward Durden, DMD , 91, of Independence, KY, entered into his eternal rest Thursday night December 28, 2023, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center –Edgewood.   Born on April 9, 1932 in Pearson, GA, he was the son of the Ben Edward and Vernice Lillian Herrin Durden.

After graduating from Russell Springs High School in Russell County, he proudly served his country by spending four years in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.  Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he entered Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY where he met his “bride-to be”. On June 20, 1958, he was united in marriage to the former MaryAnne Elander; this was the beginning of a beautiful and enriching relationship that lasted for 65 years.  After graduating from Western University, he entered the University of Louisville – School of Dentistry.  In 1963 he graduated with a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) Degree.  Immediately after graduation from Dental School, he took up practice in Flemingsburg, KY, where he practiced from 1963-1965.  From the fall of 1965, he practiced in Independence, KY until his retirement in 1999. He was a strong supporter of UK sports, an avid reader; he loved fishing and golfing; he was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association and was active in his church, Nicholson Christian Church in Independence.

In addition to his wife, MaryAnne Durden, he leaves to carry on his legacy of love, service and commitment, one daughter: Kathryn (Tony) Bradds of Bridgetown, OH; two sons: Daniel Edward (Leslie) Durden of Harrisburg, PA and Karl Benjamin (Kelly) Durden of Taylor Mill, KY.  Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Paige (Dan) Menkins, Jessica (Brett) Harlow, Lindsay (Keith) Riehle, Ben (Rachel) Durden, Kayla (Kyle) Kreft, Nathen Durden and Hannah (Jeremy) Musick, along with 12 great-grandchildren, all of whom lovingly called him “Grandpa” and Grandpa Great”.   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, John Wallace Durden.

Visitation will be Friday January 5, 2024 at Nicholson Christian Church from 10:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m.  Funeral service will begin at 1:00 with Pastor Ben Stroup officiating.  Burial will follow in Independence Cemetery.
