Gennelle Carley Howell

October 17, 1937 — June 21, 2025

Union

Dear God, we are deeply saddened that you have summoned our beautiful angel, Gennelle, to join your heavenly galaxy of angels.  You graciously delivered her to Edgar and Lois Carley in a somewhat nondescript textile town of Ninety Six in lower South Carolina on October 17, 1937.  The family subsequently relocated to Clinton, SC a short time later maintaining their employment in addition to assuming a low level farming life.  In addition to assuming a role in the caring for the typical farm activities, including chickens and cows gaining her an appreciation for that lifestyle,  Gennelle pursued her high school education in Clinton High School earning her high school diploma in 1955.

Following her high school graduation, Gennelle accepted an accounting/bookkeeping position at a local construction company where she gained invaluable experience at the trade until she met Frank at a by chance meeting in early October 1956.  Gennelle subsequently invited Frank to accompany her to her rural home to meet her family which led to a permanent lifetime bond between two people from vastly different backgrounds.  Following much discussion, Gennelle and Frank traveled to Greenville, SC and were married by a local official.  They then decided to spend a very brief period in nearby Ashville before returning to Clinton and then on to Montgomery, AL where Frank had accepted a position at nearby Maxwell Air Force Base.

This was Gennelle's introduction to a life of travel and adventure spanning the US, Pacific and European locations.  Along with Frank, Gennelle left Montgomery in 1958 and departed for Warner Robins, GA where their daughter was born in September.  After a short year the family returned to the Carley home now in Laurens, SC where she and daughter Deborah resided while Frank went on assignment to the Phillipines.  In mid-1960 Gennelle received approval to travel to the Phillipines to join Frank and reunited an overwhelming relationship that endured for the following 65 years of her life.  While in the Phillipines, Gennelle assumed participating roles in numerous activities including scouting and other activities for assisting families in making the transition to life in the Phillipines.  Gennelle exhibited an extraordinary ability in helping others to adapt to military life away from home.

In December 1961, the family moved to Barksdale Air Force Base just outside Shreveport, LA where they lived until 1963 and again returned to the Carley home now with son Robert who was born in November.  Gennelle, daughter and son remained with the Carley's until mid-1964 when, again, she received approval to travel to the Phillipines.  Similar to the previous stay, Gennelle assumed a lead role in helping other families adapt to a challenging environment away from home which resulted in official recognition and accolades from senior officials.  Gennelle continued this level of support for Frank throughout subsequent assignments to Amarillo, TX and Ankara, Turkey.

Aside from the more structured life, Gennelle thoroughly enjoyed opportunities for leisure travel to locations such as Hong Kong, Japan and traveling/camping on the Mediterranean, Bosphorus and the Black Sea while in Turkey.  She, as the rest of the family, was excited about more leisure opportunities while residing/visiting other locations and particularly traveling Europe.

Once finally settled in her home country, Gennelle embarked on efforts to enhance her personal life through employment opportunities and her education.  She rose from a position of accounting clerk at the US Air Force Academy to chief of major accounting activity with high level visibility throughout the Air Force.  Further, she accomplished this while pursuing educational challenges resulting in Associate Degrees in Accounting from Pikes Peak Community College and Regis College along with a BA Degree in accounting also from Regis College.

Gennelle achieved a lifetime of success in endeavors spanning family support, personal improvement and equally helping others.

Now departed from this life, she leaves family and friends to work and grow through the profound grief that the end of life delivers.  Survived by husband Frank Howell, daughter-in-law, Kathryn Howell, grandson, Cory Howell, granddaughters; Brittany Howell and Carissa Howell, and great grandchildren, Denver Howell, Makayla Howell, Taylor Howell, Chevy Mitchell, and Courtney Nagy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Robert Franklin "Butch" Howell and daughter, Deborah Lynn Bedwell.

Gennelle would remind us to live each day as it is our last, love and care as much as possible for those who are close, celebrate daily moments, always practice forgiveness, make a difference in your community and the lives of others, be a role model and treat and respect all in the manner that you would want to be treated and respected.
