On December 2nd, 2020, Harold Hugh Hornbeck, patriarch and nucleus of his family, left this earth to join the love of his life, Jean Lee (Cundiff), who was waiting for him at Heaven’s gate having preceded him in death. He was born at home on May 12, 1923 in Covington Kentucky. His roots were in Pendleton County coming from a long line of well-known families who have lived there before the county was formed. He was the first-born son of Harold and Lucille (Eckert) Hornbeek who were born, raised, and lived in Pendleton County until their death. His father was an engineer for 50 years with the L & N Railroad and moved to Covington from Butler, Kentucky in 1917 when hired by the railroad since there was no dependable phone service at the time in Pendleton County. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Norbert, Donald, and George. Harold and Jean were married for 65 ½ years and truly shared a unique and adoring love like none other. Harold was a loving and devoted Father to Harold Hornbeck, Sheila (Anthony) Roedig, Walter (Angela) Hornbeck, David (Lucy) Hornbeck, Joan (Matt) Moore, and Laura (John) Flesch. A deeply beloved Grandfather he leaves 19 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Harold graduated from
Covington Holmes High School in 1941. Harold served during World War II as a Tech Sergeant with the 974th Engineering Maintenance Battalion and served in both the European and Pacific Theatre of Operations. He landed in France in September 1944 and was attached to X Corps and served with the US First Army and General George Patton’s Third Army. He served in four campaigns in the European Theatre and was awarded four battle stars including participation in the infamous Battle of the Bulge. After leaving the Army he attended the University of Cincinnati School of Engineering where he graduated in 1949 obtaining his degree in chemical engineering. He was employed with Hilton Davis Chemical Company for 36 years retiring in 1985 as Director of Environmental Compliance. Harold was a man of strong Christian faith and was a member of Constance Christian Church and later Madison Avenue Christian Church. Harold and Jean were tireless workers for Gideons International. His character
was beyond question and he was selfless and sincere in all his actions.

Visitation will be 3:00 PM-7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 8th at The Madison Avenue Christian Church, 1530 Madison Avenue, Covington, KY. Military funeral service will be Wednesday, December 9th at 1:00 PM at Madison Avenue Christian Church, entombment will be immediately following at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger, KY. Due to COVID19 Restrictions, services will be limited to invitation only.
